Backing up and restoring

A backup keeps your setup in one file protected by a password: to keep it safe, or to move to another PC.

What a backup holds

  • your settings,
  • your rules,
  • your signatures and templates,
  • your Quick Steps and color categories,
  • your allowed and blocked sender lists,
  • and, if you choose, the mail downloaded to this computer (your mail is on the server anyway).

Passwords and sign-ins are never in a backup. On another PC, you sign in to each account once.

Make a backup

  1. Go to File > Open & Export and click Back Up.
  2. Type a Password for the file (at least 8 characters) and type it again.
  3. Check Also the downloaded mail if you want the mail in it too. It shows how big that is.
  4. Click Choose where… and save the file.

Without the password, the backup can't be opened by anyone, you included. Keep the password somewhere safe, away from the backup.

Restore a backup

  1. Go to File > Open & Export and click Restore.
  2. Pick the backup file and type The backup's password.
  3. The app shows when the backup was made and for which accounts. Click Restore.

What's there now is replaced by what's in the backup, and the app starts again. Accounts that came from another PC need their sign-in once (see Adding and managing accounts).

Moving to a new PC

  1. On the old PC, make a backup.
  2. Install the app on the new PC (see Getting started).
  3. Restore the backup there, then sign in to your accounts again.

To take a complete copy of your mail, calendars, contacts and tasks as well, export them to an Obsidian Data File (see Importing and exporting).
